On August 8, Dongfeng Fengxing announced pricing for its new Xinghai V6, a six-seat electric SUV that starts at 89,900 yuan (about $12,600) and tops out at 124,900 yuan. The two higher trims come with Huawei's Qiankun ADS 5 SE—a driver-assistance system that, until now, you'd only find in cars priced 50% higher. The base model is a plain EV, but the real story is the 104,900-yuan version that bundles Huawei's compute stack with a flexible three-row layout.
That price point matters. Huawei's Qiankun tech has been creeping downmarket for a while—a 15万元 (about $21,000) SUV with ADS Pro hit the streets in May—but the V6 is the first time it's landed under 110,000 yuan. For a family shopping on a budget, that's a big deal.
What the V6 Packs Under the Sheet Metal
The V6 is a mid-size SUV, not a full-size behemoth. It's 4,835 mm long, 1,900 mm wide, 1,755 mm tall, with a 2,900 mm wheelbase. That's shorter than a 5.2-meter full-size six-seater, which means the third row has to be clever about space. Dongfeng's answer: the third-row seats fold and tumble flat into the floor, creating a 1.63-square-meter flat load area with 1,630 liters of cargo space. In six-seat mode, you still get 513 liters. There's even a 70-liter frunk up front.
The idea is simple: for daily commuting, fold the third row down and you've got a roomy four-seater with a huge trunk. On weekends, flip the seats up and you can carry six people. It's a flexible layout that makes up for the smaller footprint.
Huawei's Compute: The SE Trim Explained
The two Qiankun versions use Huawei's ADS 5 SE, which is a stripped-down version of the full ADS 5. The SE relies on 10 cameras, 12 ultrasonic sensors, and 3 millimeter-wave radars—no lidar. That's a deliberate cost cut. What you get is highway NCA (navigate on autopilot), urban LCC+ (lane centering plus), smart parking, and CAS 5.0 active safety. So it can handle highway driving, follow traffic, recognize traffic lights, and park itself. What you don't get is urban NCA or the fancy 'park-to-park' 3.0 feature that Huawei showed off with the full ADS 5.
In other words, the SE is a 'lite' version—but it's still a meaningful upgrade for a family car. For someone who does a lot of highway miles, having adaptive cruise and lane-keeping that actually works is a huge relief. And the parking assist, which includes remote and memory parking, is a godsend in tight city spots.
Inside the Cabin: More Than Just a Big Screen
Step inside, and you're greeted by a 15.6-inch 2.5K touchscreen running on a Qualcomm Snapdragon 8295 chip. The voice assistant uses Baidu's ERNIE large language model, supporting wake-free continuous dialogue, dual-zone recognition, and even dialect understanding. It's a far cry from the clunky infotainment systems you'd expect at this price point.
But the V6 isn't just about screens. Safety-wise, the body uses 76% high-strength steel, including 28.4% hot-formed steel rated at 1500 MPa. The battery pack is shielded by 1080 MPa high-strength steel and a fire-resistant coating that can withstand 800°C. That's serious protection for a family vehicle.
Why Huawei Is Going Downmarket
Huawei's Qiankun division has been pushing its driver-assist systems into more affordable vehicles. As of July, it claims to have partnered with over 25 brands and 50 models, with more than 1.9 million vehicles equipped and over 12.8 billion kilometers of assisted driving logged. But to hit the biggest market segment—the 10万元 (about $14,000) family car buyer—it needs to slim down the tech.
A full ADS system with lidar, high-end compute, and city NCA is just too expensive for a car that costs 110,000 yuan. So the SE version strips out the lidar and the most complex urban features, keeping the high-frequency, high-value ones. It's a classic cost-performance trade-off.
The 'Compute Services' Angle: What You're Really Buying
When you buy a Qiankun-equipped V6, you're not just buying a car—you're buying into a compute service. Huawei's driver-assist is a subscription-like feature that relies on cloud updates, continuous development, and a massive data pipeline. The hardware in the car is just the edge node; the real intelligence lives in Huawei's data centers, where billions of kilometers of driving data train the algorithms.
That's why Huawei can afford to sell the SE at a lower price. The more cars it sells, the more data it collects, and the better the system becomes. It's a flywheel effect that benefits both Huawei and the consumer.
Is It Worth It?
So what do you actually get for 104,900 yuan? A six-seat EV with decent range (up to 510 km on the larger battery), a clever folding third row, and a driver-assist system that can handle highway driving and parking. You don't get city NCA or lidar, but you do get a taste of what autonomous driving can be—at a price that's hard to argue with.
For Dongfeng, the V6 is a way to stand out in a crowded market. For Huawei, it's a way to get its compute stack into more cars. And for families, it's a chance to own a piece of the future without breaking the bank.
